Second Chance Grant Solicitation Scheduled for Release, March 2009
The Department of Justice is scheduled to release the solicitation for the Second Chance Act grants to state and local government (sec. 101) on March 23, 2009, with applications due by May 21, 2009. The solicitation for the grants to nonprofit organizations (sec. 211) is expected to be released early next year as well. To help potential applicants prepare for the grant applications, the Justice Center has prepared fact sheets on the state and local grant program and the nonprofit program based on the requirements contained in the Second Chance Act statute. According to key Capitol Hill staff, funding for the Second Chance Act should be finalized by January 2009. Both the House and the Senate provided funding for Second Chance Act programs in their draft appropriations bills for fiscal year 2009, but the bills stalled and are not anticipated to come up for a vote until the new Congress is in session in January.
